Call for unity on Tipai issue
Criticising the government and opposition parties for not playing "positive role" on Tipaimukh Dam issue, Pirsaheb of Charmonai and Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB) chief Mufti Syed Rezaul Karim yesterday called upon them to be united on the issue to save the country from "Indian conspiracy".
He also sought help from the government and administration to make the IAB-called Tipaimukh long march, to be held on December 24, 25 and 26 a success.
Pirsaheb of Charmonai was speaking at a press conference at its office in the city to mark the upcoming long march. It was attended, among others, by IAB presidium members Syed Musaddek Billah Almadani and Maulana Nurul Huda Foyezi, its general secretary Maulana Yunus Ahmed, Prof Mahbubur Rahman, Prof Syed Belayet Hossain and Munirul Islam.
The press conference was told that IAB called the long march to draw the attention of international forum about the adverse impacts of Tipaimukh dam by India at the upper reaches of the rivers Surma and Kushiara.
It was also informed that the route of the long march will be Dhaka-Brahmanbaria-Sylhet-Zakiganj.
The long march will start from Muktangan in Dhaka on December 24 and it will reach Zakigonj on December 26 through holding meetings at different places in the route including Narayanganj-Chittagong Road, Belanagar in Narsingdi, Brahmanbaria, Sayestaganj in Habiganj, Sherpur in Moulvibazar, Sylhet Govt. Alia Madrasha Maidan and Zakigonj.
A seven-day campaign programme to make the long march a success was announced at the conference. The campaign programmes include views exchange with the political parties on December 19 at its office, procession and meeting in each upazila of the country on December 20, procession at Muktangan on December 21 and procession in each district on December 22.
