August 19, 2008 Press Release
Dhaka, Aug 19 (News Network) - Netherlands Ambassador to Bangladesh Bea M. ten Tusscher Tuesday urged women to increasingly take up journalism as their career to remove the existing gender inequality in the profession.
“Not only do we need more female journalists, but we also want a change in the gender stereotyped presentation of women in the media,” she said at a certificate distribution ceremony organised by News Network at its Dhanmondi office.
Ambassador Tusscher distributed certificates among a group of News Network female fellows who completed a six-month training course on practical journalism, supported by Free Voice, a Netherlands-base international organisation.
Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Zaglul A. Chowdhury was present at the function as special guest. Presided over by News Network Editor Shahiduzzaman, the function was attended, among others, by First Secretary of the Netherlands Embassy in Dhaka Anja Roelofs.
Referring to the News Network training programme, Ambassador Tusscher said any training aiming to increase the number of skilled female journalists has a greater importance.
She hoped that all concerned, be it the government, private sector or the civil society, will work together in the coming years to create a more gender-balanced society, particularly in the field of media, as it has the potentials to make a far greater contribution to the advancement of women.
Speaking on the occasion, Zaglul A Chowdhury appreciated the News Network’s female journalist development programme and laid emphasis on continuing it. ##
